Robert William Graham Taylor (Bob) was born in Ewell in 1943. He attended Thannington School until 8 years old, then Glyn Grammar School until 14 years old. He trained as an Article Clerk for 5 years and to his family's delight, passed his Articles and qualified as an Accountant in 1962.
He worked for Gale & Polden printers and publishers in Aldershot and then moved on to Metco Division Perkin Elmer USA (based in Cobham and Beaconsfield, the World's leading producer of analytical instruments) as Director of Finance and Administration & Company Secretary which involved a lot of international travel!
He loved his job but also loved the game of darts, he reached the regional finals in the 1970's. We both started playing pool together in the mid 1970's and developed a passion for the game.
We became involved with the Surrey County Pool Association in 1985. All was well until 1989 when due to a shortage of players, the then Chairman Ken Maling, who funded the Association, because of a shortage of players, resigned leaving the SCPA short of funds. None of us had ever heard of a pool league until Bob and I started visiting Surrey pubs and clubs talking to players trying to find a solution to keep the SCPA going.
We eventually, after several months discovered 25 pool leagues, 14 of which affiliated giving the SCPA the funding it needed to survive! We have both supported the EPA and SCPA by entering all National and Southern events!
We both qualified as Mensa Members in 1981. We reached the final of a Mensa pool competition in 2007, Bob winner and me runner up.
